There
are few countries in Asia which have a more open political system than
Taiwan. Martial law was lifted in 1987. People raised their heads, dusted
themselves off and started to get on with life. Many political parties
have emerged. Taiwan independence is always a 'back burner' issue. Officially
the present ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party, is committed
to holding a referendum on independence. However, the fast growing two-way
trade between Taiwan and the mainland dampens enthusiasm for rocking the
boat. |
